Clinician's Note

"Children experience big, intense emotions long before they possess the language to express them. When a child throws a tantrum or shuts down, they are often communicating an overwhelming emotional state that they lack the vocabulary to describe."

1. Why Emotional Vocabulary Matters

When children learn to identify and label their emotions — 'I am feeling frustrated', 'I feel overwhelmed', 'I feel left out' — it shifts their brain response from reactiveness to regulation.

Building an emotional vocabulary empowers children to process difficult feelings constructively rather than acting them out through behavioral meltdowns or withdrawal.

2. Practical Strategies for Parents & Educators

Validate First, Correct Later: Instead of saying 'There is no reason to be upset', say 'I see that you are feeling really disappointed right now. It is okay to feel that way.'

Use Feeling Wheels & Visual Cards: Visual cues help children connect internal sensations with specific emotional words.

Model Emotional Language: Share your own feelings in daily conversation: 'I am feeling a little stressed right now, so I am going to take three deep breaths.'

"Name it to tame it. Giving a name to a big emotion reduces its intensity and opens the door for calm conversation."

3. When to Consult a Child Psychologist

If your child experiences persistent emotional distress, frequent intense meltdowns, or difficulty adjusting at school or home, a specialized child psychologist can provide targeted evaluation and play therapy support.
